Public health advocates applaud Gov. Whitmer’s commitment to protecting youth from the dangers of tobacco use and e-cigarettes
Governor calls for eliminating tax loophole on vaping products
LANSING – The Keep MI Kids Tobacco Free Alliance applauds Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for calling for stronger protections against e-cigarette use to protect Michigan youth as part of her 2025 State of the State address. In her speech, the governor stressed the need to close a longstanding tax loophole by taxing e-cigarettes products similarly to how Michigan taxes other tobacco products.
In response to Whitmer including tobacco prevention in her State of the State address, Alliance Co-chair and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Regional Director Jodi Radke issued the following statement:
“By enacting stronger tobacco prevention policies to protect youth, including taxing e-cigarette products, Michigan will help protect our youth from a lifetime of nicotine addiction. Vaping and other tobacco use is far too common among Michigan kids, and we must prioritize their health over the profits of the tobacco industry. Our Alliance appreciates Governor Whitmer’s leadership and commitment to protecting our youth from the dangers of tobacco use. We look forward to working with her and Michigan legislators to enact this and other tobacco prevention policies this session.”
